Programs which run on other operating systems, which are QL-related or make life easier for QL users.


BMP2PIC - a Windows program from Phoebus R. Dokos to convert Windows BMP files to QL screens. Available to download from Graphics page.

Habi's Image Editor software - a Windows program to handle SD, CF, HD or DOM media in QL format. Available from Qubide page.

DaDither - Windows utility designed to convert full-color BMP, GIF, PNG and JPG images into palette images or images designed to be displayed on various retro platforms such as QL, ZX-Spectrum, SAM and BBC Micro. Converts to MODE 4, 8, 16, 32 and 33 for QL-type systems. With various palette and dithering options. Available for 32-bit and 64-bit Windows versions. Just unzip to desired Windows folder and run from there (note: Windows executable, not QL). From the website https://www.dadither.com/

JoyToKey - a Windows program which enables PC game controllers to emulate the keyboard and mouse input, so that windows applications and web games can be controlled with your favorite joysticks! Whenever joystick buttons and sticks are pressed, JoyToKey converts them into keyboard strokes and/or mouse movements so that the target application will work as if you are using a real keyboard and a mouse! May be useful when using QL games which have only keyboard control, or intended for use with cursor key emulating joystick or mouse, on a Windows QL emulator. JoyToKey is a shareware, but you can download the latest version for free. Try it on your PC to play various games and control general softwares with your joysticks! If you find JoyToKey useful, you can purchase a license key at any time from JoyToKey application menu. JoyToKey runs on Windows 10,8,7,Vista, XP.
Download "JoyToKey_en.zip" from the links below, and unzip it into any folder you like. Then, execute JoyToKey.exe.  Its web site is at https://joytokey.net/en/ for further information, more recent downloads etc.
Two versions can be downloaded here - the latest (at the time of writing August 2018) version 5.9 and an older version 5.2.1 which avoids some compatibility issues with online games.

PNGconv - a program from Marcel Kilgus to convert PNG image files to GD2 sprite formats of GD2. Unlike most other converters it can handle the alpha channel information of the PNG file format to create SMSQ/E sprites with transparency. Download direct from Marcel Kilgus's site.

Psion Chess - A version of the Psion Chess program for DOS/Windows systems. Note: does not run on 64-bit Windows systems. Available to download from Games page.

Psion PC Four - in 1986, Psion released a version of Abacus, Archive, Easel and Quill for DOS systems, called PC Four. (460K)
pcfour2.zip - a slightly more recent version from 1987, added here for posterity. I'm afraid I don't know what differences there may be between the versions. (456K)

QDOS-GCC - A GCC cross-compiler for Linux whichis able to generate QDOS/SMS executables. Available from the C and C68 page.

Q-Stripper - A version of The Stripper by Norman Dunbar for Windows and for Linux, which allows Windows or Linux users to open multiple Quill documents and save them in various other formats - text, html, Docbook XML and PDF. Download the required version and any support files required from Sourceforge - click here to visit the page.

QL Disk Reader - a DOS program which can read files from a QL floppy disk. A formerly commercial program from Utility Room. Download from File Transfer page.

QLRead - a Mac program. A disk utility allowing you to list and read files from a QDOS formatted floppy disk on a Macintosh computer. Download fromthe File Transfer page.

Quill-View is a simple application to convert QL Quill files to Text (UTF-8) and HTML format. It translates all Q-DOS characters and most of the commonly used formatting features in Quill, thus producing results very similar to what a printed copy from Quill would look like. Includes executables for QDOS, Windows and Linux. Download from File Transfer page.

Qxl Win Reader - a Wolfgang Lenerz program to read/write qxl.win type container files, and (expermimentally) qubide formatted container files from any java enabled PC. Download from File Transfer page, or from Wolfgang Lenerz's QL software page.

ShowQS is a DOS program to view mode 4 or mode 8 QL screen files as a slide show. Download from Graphics page.

SMSQEsprites - Java program from Wolfgang Lenerz for converting image files gif, bmp, tif, png, jpg image files to SMSQ/E sprite files in modes 4,16,32 and 64. You can add a reflection of the image, which will slowly fade away. Needs Java 7. The program is called SMSQESprites.jar and is in the "dist" subdirectory of the archive. SuperBASIC Syntax Files - Some syntax files for various text editors such as BBEdit/Wrangler/VIM/Texpad/Notepad++ to make it easier to use them to edit SuperBASIC programs. These are available on the Editors & Viewers page.

WUNPIC is a Windows program to convert screen and PIC files from QL to PNG. PS, GIF, TIFF, BMP or PCX formats. Download this (and QL version) from the Graphics page.

WXQT2, QLTools and QXLTool - these are file transfer tools for transferring files to various platforms, running on assorted platforms. Download from the Files page on my site, or from the Jonathan Hudson QDOS site at http://www.daria.co.uk/qdos/
